Certificates from letsencrypt movement

New keys and certificates have been created using the code from the Letsencrypt.org movement. At the same time, the allowed cipher combinations to reach the web-server have been reduced to a set of strong/high secure ones.
Also - the mail-server (SMTP and IMAP) has received a set of new key/certificates, and also the allowed Ciphers and protocols have been restricted further to allow only high grade encryption to pass.

The Certificate warning err...

Blacklisting reaction improved

Since I noticed some script-kiddies to actually launch a distributed cross-site-scripting and directory traversal attacks, and at the same time spawn 5 to 10 jobs per site, the blacklisting reaction time needed to be shortened and enhanced.
What happens now is that the system not only reacts on par with the remote attackers request, but it also tells the firewall to directly terminate all active connections to the attackers IP address.

The first reports have shown that the first re...

How to stop Windows 10 upgrade on Win7/8

And yes, the possibility exists, and requires a modification of the local registry.
These are the steps to follow:

  • Open the Registry Editor (search for regedit in the Start Menu and run it)
  • Set DisableOSUpgrade to 1 in HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindowsWindowsUpdate
  • Set ReservationsAllowed to 0 in HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionWindowsUpdateOSUpgrade

Funny how the title does not really mention what is really done in the official doc...

Firewall updated

The local firewall software has been updated. As it allows now to handle a timeout on blacklisted IP's, the entire code to feed the black-list has been simplified dramatically. This also means that way more sources of data will be fed to the blacklist processor, and the blacklisting will be also way faster than before.
Additionally, the firewall will also handle de-listing from the blacklist itself (time-based).

HTTPS only activated

The phpPhobos/Stargate website has been configured to only accept HTTPS connections due to recent revelations concerning secret service around the globe spying on all connections to create metadata.
The only protection for us - humble citizens on this planet - is to provide the secret services so many data to de-crypt that it won't make a difference anymore.
As a little add-on, this site will allow only high grade encryption ciphers, and especially those known to not allow Man in the M...

Spam attack - ended...

a recent massive spam-attack on my mailserver has put the latter one into denial mode. This means, that internal mails where still processed, sending out mails too, but the mail-server has refused to accept any Internet-inbound mail.
After identifying the 6 IP-Addresses that where mail-flooding my mail-server, my ISP dropped routing from these IP's, and the mail-server could come back to normal operation. Note - the blue color is Rejected mails.

FSK 16 - in Germany ?

Usual suspect

a new law comes - and this one base on the FSK
From January 1st 2011, all sites providing uncontrolled access to data are required to tag the data entries with apropriate FSK values.
This is again - a stupid law - done by people having absolutely no idea on how the Internet works.
So we see once again - how good our governments are working. Especially - how much brain they put into their decisio...

Very active Bots II ...

Well - what I suspected to happen, happened. In fact, in 24hours, I had 6 Bot-Login requests coming through.

I don't know, if valid/real requests had been made here though.
From the submitted E-Mail Addresses, I do think that these are Bots.

Seems I'll have to add a possibility to identify living human brains somehow. Note that the system requests the User to validate his request. he is being sent a link to activate. If he does not do it - even the admin can not un...

Very active Bots ....

it looks like some bots are very active, and have a small AI permitting to perform login requests.
Upon user request - I had reactivated user-account requests on my website.
It didn't take 1 Hour for 2 Account-requests to get through, obviously with wrong E-Mail addresses. I'll observe the overall behavior. If it get's overhelming, I'll disable Account-Creation again.

SSH access to systems disabled ...

SSH Access to stargate systems has been disabled. There are still methods to access the servers behind the firewall, but these will only be communicated to the granted persons.

There are simply too many ssh-brute force attack attempts going on (Average of 7/day) with peaks of 25. The old defensive techniques (self developed dynamic blacklisting) are still valid, raising the security a little higher.
