MPOE Small

After some thinking, a new Main Point Of Entry MPOE setup has been installed in the basement. The idea is to put Cat6 cabling into the entire house (actually, using the old phone-line conduits havong unshielded cheap cables), and the central hub of all the conduits was the basement.

The MPOE was chosen to be large enough to also host the first point of contact with the local Telco. In the current case ADSL, while end of the year fiber is planned. Note that moving the ADSL Modem i...

New facelift

PHP development

phpPhobos has a new default theme, to make it look a little bit more modern and adapt to the larger screen resolutions out there.
Many functions have been adapted to also support php7 - as that seems to be the new standard php.
All icons are now in svg format (kindly taken from the KDE Project, Plasma team). SVG is a vector format allowing to scale the icons without quality impact.
On top of the facelift, one can now also use a limited set of emoticons  face-smile.svg (also in svg format)...

RC Logo

The RC Models database has been released. It is based mostly on the dyntbl extension which enables users to create and configure their own storage systems while taking advantage of the secured code of the phpPhobos website.
So far - the only accessible interface is the RC Model Listing for people to be able to see the models. Going on the details of the models, one can see what hardware is being used and the details will provide even more insight on the used hardware devices and batteries.[...

Certificates from letsencrypt movement

Secure Logo

New keys and certificates have been created using the code from the Letsencrypt.org movement. At the same time, the allowed cipher combinations to reach the web-server have been reduced to a set of strong/high secure ones.
Also - the mail-server (SMTP and IMAP) has received a set of new key/certificates, and also the allowed Ciphers and protocols have been restricted further to allow only high grade encryption to pass.

The Certificate warning err...

Blacklisting reaction improved

Since I noticed some script-kiddies to actually launch a distributed cross-site-scripting and directory traversal attacks, and at the same time spawn 5 to 10 jobs per site, the blacklisting reaction time needed to be shortened and enhanced.
What happens now is that the system not only reacts on par with the remote attackers request, but it also tells the firewall to directly terminate all active connections to the attackers IP address.

The first reports have shown that the first re...

And yes, the possibility exists, and requires a modification of the local registry.
These are the steps to follow:

  • Open the Registry Editor (search for regedit in the Start Menu and run it)
  • Set DisableOSUpgrade to 1 in HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindowsWindowsUpdate
  • Set ReservationsAllowed to 0 in HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionWindowsUpdateOSUpgrade

Funny how the title does not really mention what is really done in the official doc...

ISP instability

Linux Hardware

Seems that our ADSL 2+ line has become unstable - for whatever reason. After some investigation, I found out that all existing connections can still go through, however any new initiated connection fails. Also a ping.
I however also noticed that restarting the ADSL Modem forced the remote end to sync, and work again. So - wrote a little script that will monitor the connection to the ISP's gateway, and in case that one is not reachable, the ADSL Modem will be restarted.

Win 10 and total observation

Stargate Icon

Since Microsoft has released Windows 10, many things have changed. Notably, you are now almost forced to upgrade your old Windows session (Win7, Win 8 and 8.1). Also, Microsoft now collects a complete set of data - and they call that telemetry and data analysis for cortana. Only, for that to work, all the data needs to be collected all the time, as eventually you can tell cortana to execute an action. Imagine the Microphone always active and listening sending the data out to Microsofts sy...

New NAS installed

As the CPU of the old NAS was really a limit to many things - a NAS found a new home - using a 2.2Ghz Xeon CPU, 16GB Ram, and the storage has been expanded to 8 usable TB (that can be expanded to 12. Currently Raid 5 + 1 with 4 disks).
Added a 120GB SSD drive for the OS, and a PCIe eSATA Card to attache the external monthly backup drive. This new NAS is based on a HP Microserver gen8.
The only bad thing about this is that they use ILO internally (As a kind of BIOS replacement), and it...
