P-40 Warhawk EP - finished...

Warhawk

Took me a while to get that beast up and ready to fly. All that I need now - is to wait for some decent weather to make the maiden-flight.
From all the planes I have built (ARF), I must say that this kit of the P-40 Warhawk EP is the best in terms of finish, and accuracy of all parts I had in my hands. Also in terms of flexibility (Thermic/Electric engine). Everything required - was in the kit.
This small War-bird has been equipped with the following pieces:

  • Boost 18 1050KV electric engine (12 Poles) from pichler
  • APC-E 11x5.5 props + a High quality cone
  • T45-ESC From Graupner, with integrated Telemetry
  • 3xHitec HS-81 HB Servos for aileron, elevator and rudder
  • Graupner GR-16 receiver

First tests have shown that the prop may be a little too big for the Engine, but we'll see in flight. Engine/Prop combinations are known to require more power when the plane is still (not in movement), so I really need to check it out in real conditions. In a test condition, the ESC was providing 30A to the engine, and this is definitely too much according to the engine specs (Max 22A for 60secs).
I also assembled this plane for belly landings. As we only have a grass runway, the wheels are way to small for take-off/landings on it, so no landing gear.

I'll report back when I'll have the the maiden flight, and have some pics to post.

Update: Fri Jun 7 19:57:41 CEST 2013
The maiden flight is not yet done, however putting a 10x5 prop on the plane reduces the power consumption to 22A which is perfect for this engine. I'll see if the temperature and weather conditions stay as they are, I'll probably do the maiden-flight this week-end !

Update: Sun Jun 30 20:54:04 CEST 2013
OK - had my maiden flight finally. The first attempt was 2 weeks ago, and as I had decided to prep the bird for belly landing, a Co-Pilot proposed to throw the model. Only - he didn't know how to do it, and nose-dived it into the ground. Had to repair it - and the 2 weeks of constant rain helped here. I also modified the bird as to add the landing gear, and add larger wheels (bigger diameter, so I can start and land on grass).
The good news. I did not even have to trim. It started against the wind, and went up as if it was the most natural thing. I admit - the engine is a right fit (this, coming from someone always overpowering its birds). However flight times of 15Minutes are well possible. And this small thing is really fun flying. Very easy, and reacts very well to all commands. A real joy !
