  Comment on Model

This airplane requires 2 batteries for normal operation.

Note that the 3S sized power system as mentioned by the manual does barely provide enough thrust to fly this airplane like a pregnant whale. Sluggish and always afraid to crash-land.
Only with the 4S setup and 3x9x7 Props, does this plane have enough power to fly as a plane would fly. It uses up to 55Amp which is a little too much for the engines. So one need to be careful to only use the power when really required, and only for short amounts of time!

Warbird Heinkel He 111

Heinkel HE111 small

A new plane had to be built, and I really had no clue on what to take until I saw the Black Horse Heinkel He 111 Kit. As my former Spitfire (it had crashed. I first thought an aileron connector went lose in the take off phase during a windy day and there was practically nothing I could do to recover, it however was a ESC firmware bug that caused the non responsiveness of the Engine), I had the receiver and some servos available. I had however to get some new engines and ESC.

A first attempt to get it all failed, as the engine OMA-3820-1200 was not available. I turned back to the Turnigy Aerodrive SK3 - 3542-1185kv Brushless Outrunner Motor. This engine has practically the same technical specs as the OMA-3820-1200 Engine in size, weight and power.
As it makes no sense to have ESC with Telemetry that cannot be used, I decided to take 2 TURNIGY Plush 60amp Speed Controller ESC. Compared to the Graupner Equipment, I had an 200 euro advantage.
In the end, here is the used hardware:

  • 2xTurnigy Aerodrive SK3 - 3542-1185kv Brushless Outrunner
  • 2x10 x 5 Xoar Beechwood-Elektro-LS and normal
  • 2xTURNIGY Plush 60amp Speed Controller
  • 2xTURNIGY 3300mAh 3S 30C Lipo
  • 7xServo DES 657 BB Graupner
  • 2xServo Futaba S 3170 G BB (Retract)
  • Graupner GR-24 Receiver

After receiving the Black Horse Kit, the front canopy was broken. A replacement has been ordered. On the other hand, I noticed that the left flap was distorted, and recovering is practically not possible: the cover is self-adhesive and cannot be removed or corrected in any way without destroying it. This is the last time I will buy a ARTF kit - as these seem to be done for fast money, and the quality is getting worse over time.

Current status: Flying :) Well - flying is a strong word. This bird is way overweight with all the lead it had to take. It is like flying a pregnant whale, which gives an impression of always falling.

  • Latest hardware setup stored in the RC Models DB
  • Using 4S power packs now. At least there is enough thrust now.
  • Replaced cones with small alu-ones. On the same occasion, the 10x7 APC-E bi-blades have been replaced by MAS 9x7 tri-blades. Due to the landing field, the wheels have also been replaced by bigger ones. Makes take off and landing easier.
  • Sensors working fine. Propeller cones are so unbalanced, the vibrations actually broke the aileron attaches on the left wing. Had to do an emergency landing. propellers still too small.
  • Pre flight check, Trimming done. Maiden flight successful. The Engine/propeller combination is not good. Not enough reserve. Also, the plane is very heavy.
  • 30 May 2014: Added 386g of lead into the nose to balance this bird. Hopefully it will be enough. The CG is almost perfect according to the plans.
  • 19 May 2014: Built into the receiver and battery backup system using a self made second deck located on the CG
  • 16 May 2014 : New flap in place. As I didn't have the self adhesive colored cover, I had to paint it. Not exactly the same color, but it is Ok.
  • 11 May 2014 : All servos arrived and are built in. As there are too many cables, built a special reduction setup so there is only one thick cable going to the receiver.
  • 04 May 2014 : Still waiting for 2 DES 657 and the 2 S 3170 BB Retract servos. All the rest is there.
