I have came by pure hasard accross the DHC-2 Beaver 25e from e-flite.
Horizon continues rolling out impressive models, this time with the impressive E-flite Platinum line DHC-2 Beaver. For those who have not seen this impressive line of models I can assure you they are very well built, have true scale lines and they look fantastic.
The quality of the Kit is impressive. It's a Platinum Series kit, and what can be prebuilt is pre-built.
After reading through loads of forums and websites, on what to power it with, I decided for the first time to go with Cheap stuff from Hong-Kong. Here is what I came up so far:
- TR4250A-700/2099 TR 42-50A 700kv Brushless Outrunner / 720W
- Graupner T-60 G3 Speed Controller
- Master Airscrew propeller 10x7x3
- Turnigy 4000mAh 4S 20C Lipo Pack
With this - there is enough power for any kind of flying ...
And for the RC Equipment, I used Graupner/JR equipment, as there is some cheap good stuff in germany too.
- 6 x Servo DES 657 BB (Digital with Ball Bearing)
- Graupner GR24 Receiver
- 2S LiFePo receiver battery connected in parallel to BEC through a Schottky diode
The Built time was approximately a Saturday afternoon. Needless to say, that most time was spent waiting for the Epoxy of the Wings to harden enough to continue building.
The only criticism on that airplane are the fact that only Inch-Equipment is used (in Germany, we use Metric equipment), and the engine-cowl mounting which definitely needs a remake.
The CG was OK. I didn't have to move anything, just the engine mounted, battery in place, receiver Battery in, and voila. CG in the range it is supposed to be. It is located at about 60mm.
Programming the RC system took a little bit longer, as I had read in various Forums, that in case of Flap activation, the aileron commands won't respond as usual. So I Mixed the aileron control into the flaps, so I have more control in case I use the latter.
In the end however - everything worked out fine, so the maiden flight could be done.
What can I say.
I didn't even have to trim anything. It just went up, and did fly. Very smooth controls, very calm flight, it loves the rudder control (this was also stated on several sites already), and with the first 3300mAh Battery pack in, flying 6minutes in mixed mode flight, I had to charge only about 1.5Ah back into it. Changed the Flying Time to 9m30secs, and after the later flights, found out that with this configuration and flight time, I had to charge back in about 2.5Ah, which is just fine.
One little warning though. Always keep a little bit of speed for landings, as when loosing portance, it drops on the right wing and falls ... and with Flaps out - you have to push a little, as these have almost the same function as Air-brakes on some other plane types...
As I played around with a FlyCamOne V2 on that beaver - I even made a small film about it.
If anyone knows how to get the flycam to not change the Illumination all the time, please let me know.
As a final note - I can only state that this bird is a real pleasure to fly.
